Chemotherapy

Myths vs Facts

Understanding the Truth About Cancer Treatment

Chemotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for many types of cancer.

However, it is also surrounded by fear and misinformation. Many patients feel anxious even before starting treatment because of things they have heard from others.

At Vijaya Memorial Cancer Care Centre (VMCCC), Jabalpur, we believe that correct information reduces fear and improves treatment confidence.

Let’s separate myths from facts.

What is Chemotherapy?

Chemotherapy is a treatment that uses medicines to destroy cancer cells. It may be given:

  • Before surgery (to shrink tumor)
  • After surgery (to reduce recurrence risk)
  • As the main treatment in advanced cancers
  • Along with radiation in certain cases

Modern chemotherapy is far more advanced and safer than what many people imagine.

Common Chemotherapy Myths vs Facts

Myth 1: Chemotherapy is Always Extremely Painful

Fact:

Chemotherapy itself is usually not painful. It is given through an IV line in a controlled daycare setting. Some drugs may cause temporary side effects, but severe pain during infusion is uncommon.

Myth 2: Everyone Loses Their Hair

Fact:

Not all chemotherapy causes hair loss. Hair loss depends on the type of drug used. Some treatments cause complete hair loss, some cause thinning, and some do not affect hair at all.

Importantly, hair usually grows back after treatment.

Myth 3: Chemotherapy Means the Cancer is Very Serious

Fact:

Chemotherapy is used in both early-stage and advanced cancers.

In early-stage breast or colon cancer, chemotherapy may be given to increase cure chances, not because the disease is severe.

Myth 4: Chemotherapy Destroys the Entire Immune System

Fact:

Chemotherapy can temporarily reduce blood counts, but this is monitored carefully.

With regular blood tests and supportive medications, most patients complete treatment safely.

Myth 5: You Cannot Live Normally During Chemotherapy

Fact:

Many patients continue light daily activities during treatment.

While some days may feel tiring, most patients are able to:

  • Eat normally
  • Walk and move around
  • Spend time with family
